PHILOSOPHY

Sustainability is a frequently used and commonly misunderstood term in our 21st century American society. The Ecolibrium Group defines sustainability as the fine balance of environmental, economic, and social interests. For this reason, we approach projects in a holistic manner, by ensuring that strategic goals do not focus too heavily on any single element of this equation, but improve the entire triple bottom line, benefiting planet, profit, and people.

Planet: There are now 7 billion people on Earth, and most projections suggest that the population will reach 9 billion in the next 40 years. EG promotes the concept of "One Planet Living," where communities and nations use resources efficiently enough to allow for a natural recharge, and resources are not used to exhaustion. EG recognizes that with increasing global demand of continuously scarce resources, meeting this demand in a sustainable fashion not only provides an incredible challenge, but it also presents an amazing opportunity for innovation. This is especially true locally in the US, where 5% of the global population uses 25% of its current resource output.

Profit: EG understands that implementing the efficient and restorative use of resources not only improves the long-term financial viability of society, it also improves short-term operating costs. The concepts of sustainable economic growth, environmental sustainability and sustainable communities are not mutually exclusive. Saving resources saves money. Long-term economic prosperity requires natural resources in order to produce goods, however the current rate of resource exhaustion, in the form of energy, water and minerals does not take long-term viability into account. As well, most current environmental and social pursuits ignore the need for fiscal or social responsibility.

People: Sustainability is inherently a quality-of-life issue. Research has shown that connecting people to their environment, be it in their home, neighborhood, or at work, improves their overall state of mind. The Ecolibrium Group believes that the triple bottom line isn't strengthened by putting fences around wilderness areas or feel-good green-washing campaigns, but by improving employee working conditions through day-lighting and creating natural open spaces where citizens can interact with their environment. Economic development must improve air quality as much as it improves job growth.

SERVICES

There is no universal formula with which to create a sustainable reality, and in most cases the driving force behind "going green" will fluctuate significantly between stakeholders. The Ecolibrium Group provides a set of consulting services designed to bring balance to each client situation.

Sustainable Action Planning
At EG, the keys to a successful planning framework are ensuring the long-term economic security, public health, and environmental vitality of the client. Planning also requires prioritization of ideas based not only on expected benefits, but also fiscal constraint and stakeholder engagement and support.

The EG Sustainable Action Planning suite of services provides in-depth analysis of client operations, including but not limited to: Operating and Supply Chain Process Analysis, Sustainable Footprint Establishment, Process Reengineering, Capital Investment Planning, and Implementation Management Services.

Sustainability Performance Management
EG believes the value of any sustainability strategy can only be measured by its capacity to be implemented. Once a sustainable action plan is set in place, measuring the performance of strategic initiatives is critical to ensure the integrity of the capital investment and to encourage continuous improvement. Sustainability Performance Management requires the establishment of a baseline footprint and metrics by which to measure the outcomes of proposed/enacted initiatives.

EG has designed a set of sustainability key performance indicators (KPI's), based on the United Nation's Urban Environmental Accords, which measure energy use, waste reduction, urban design, urban nature, transportation, environmental health, and water use. Since each client situation is different, this standard set of KPI's can be tailored to fit each client's unique requirements.

Business Development for Green Companies
Situated in the heart of the Northeast corridor with a significant economic base, the Delaware Valley is perfectly located to reestablish its identity as the "workshop of the world" for the next Industrial Revolution: the Green Economy. With the advancement of green construction and renewable energy in the Northeast, which promote local manufacturing, the Delaware Valley is poised to leverage its location and existing industrial assets to become a hub for green business.

The Ecolibrium Group provides marketing, sales, and government relations support for clean energy and triple bottom line businesses looking to establish a client base and/or manufacture in the Delaware Valley region.

TEAM

After many years in the private and public sectors, the Ecolibrium Group principals witnessed the frustration many organizations experience from not knowing the best means to "go green." EG was created to address this deficit and bring guidance and clarity to private and public entities searching for ways to achieve a healthy triple bottom line.

Natalia Olson Urtecho, Chief Executive Officer, has over 17 years of experience working with international, regional and local entities. Prior to founding the Ecolibrium Group, Natalia began her career as a diplomat with the U.S. State Department, leading flood relief missions, and setting up the first national environmental protection entity in Eastern Europe. She returned to the United States in 2001 to earn a Masters in Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, and has spent the past seven years improving regional coordination, economic development, transportation and smart growth planning in the Delaware Valley region.

Natalia has been a perpetual driving force for sustainability issues in the Delaware Valley region. She is one of the founding members of the Philadelphia Green Economy Task Force, and currently volunteers on the Wharton Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership Faculty Advisory Committee and the Philadelphia International Task Force. In January 2008, Natalia was appointed by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to serve on the Philadelphia City Planning Commission and Zoning Code Commission, and she currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Zoning Code Commission.

Nathan Turner, Chief Operating Officer, received his bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from Northwestern University, and has spent the majority of his career in the consulting sector, developing innovative and efficient solutions for a diverse set of clients across the globe. Nate started his career designing and building green homes, and then moved onto larger scale municipal projects, constructing and redesigning water treatment facilities in South Florida. From there, Nate shifted the focus of his consulting career to the big picture thinking of business management strategy where he helped energy and natural resources companies such as AgipKCO, Caterpillar, and US Steel streamline operations and devise capital investment strategies.

Nate helped create the Ecolibrium Group to combine his experience in the energy, water and construction industries and his expertise in engineering and business strategy to tackle issues of sustainability. Throughout his career, Nate has focused his efforts on promoting efficiency and reducing waste in all forms, whether it is time, money, energy, material, or water.

Nathaniel Doyno, Vice President of Clean Technology, is an experienced clean tech entrepreneur, executive and community leader, who has co-founded, managed and advised some of Pennsylvania’s most exciting social ventures.
